My Love for Media: #storytime

Welcome back to my blog, my beautiful friends! For this post, I will be talking about my love for media. I classified it as a storytime because it will start building up like a story, starting from the past and moving towards the present time.

At an age where all girls wanted to be when they grew up was to be a nurse, teacher singer or actress, all I wanted to be was different. It started from designing homes to being a tour guide so I could travel the world. Then, I saw Titanic for the first time ever in the early 2000s that I had a change in heart, and a good one…

I wanted to make movies.

When I told my parents this, they thought I was mad. Movies?! In such a small country with lack of opportunities?! ABSURD! And of course, I changed things up:

Photography – parents said the same thing,

Journalism – the same thing happened,

The cycle went on until I actually made up my mind about journalism, much to my parents’ dismay. But at the end of the day, it’s all about what I wanted right? Well, not for them.

So I went to University where I started a Bachelors in Communications and English because that’s what I needed to become a journalist in this country. As soon as the course started, I realised it wasn’t for me. On the other hand, I had a credit that was what I wanted to study full-time: Film Language. I was in awe at how close to home I went to every lecture, despite it being the last lecture on  Friday from 5pm til 7pm. Many students, I remember, left halfway through the lecture or while they were showing a movie clip. Learning about the behind-the-scenes of a film made me want it more. During that time, I also took an extra credit on scriptwriting. since I loved writing, I thought to combine my love for film and writing together into a possible career.

Still working on that last part. I’m in a hiatus mode type thing right now.

Let’s fast-forward to today (present-time).

A few weeks ago, I was given the opportunity of a lifetime to sit for a ten-day course (and then a four-day continuation in end of June) about media literacy. I submitted my application on the eve of my birthday, and a few days later, I got accepted! I was beyond myself and crying hysterically when I got the news (please note I was at work!) because I’d not only be learning what I loved most but also TEACH IT!

It’s not exactly directing or producing the next blockbuster movie, but hey, maybe that person would be one of my students!
